THRILL SEEKING

Bungy Jump in Nepal

INTRODUCTION

There are no limits to the thrills you can take here in Nepal. This is much more than the land of treks and white water rafting, and in conjunction with a trek or rafting, there are other options for serious thrill seekers.

Nepal offers some of the most spectacular bungy jumping in the world. This fantastic jump is one of the worlds longest and most picturesque. Located on a bridge over the Bhote Koshi River just 12 kms south of Tibet and the famous Friendship Bridge. At 160 meters, the drop is only comparable to the world's highest in New Zealand. The recently introduced option of the swinging bungy jump is fast becoming another popular, albeit less intense, option.

WHO OPERATES BUNGY IN NEPAL

We work together with The Last Resort which in fact operates the Bungy Nepal and is located 12 km from the Tibetan Border in Nepal. Bungy Nepal was set up by Kiwi David Allerdice and Nepali Bishnu Neopane. Together they scouted the area for a long time to find the perfect location for the 166 meter long and 160 meter high suspension bridge. The bridge was finally built in three months and the first jump took place in 1999.

Two new partners have since joined the company, Australian Pat o’Keeffe and Dutch Sam Voolstra. The company has 50 staff members, the majority from the local area. They were trained by international experts and together run two offices, one resort, the bungy and swing operation, canyoning and hiking.

Before the construction, the local villagers had to walk five hours to cross the river gorge. The building of the bridge has a positive impact on the development of the local economy and infrastructure.

SAFETY

All adventures are truly unique experiences, they demand choosing a company with the right expertise, attitude and equipment, and above all respect for the natural forces we play with. Our extremely talented jump staff sets safety standards for others to follow, leaving you free to enjoy your adventure with the knowledge that you are in the most capable of hands.

The jump site in Nepal was designed in 1999 by one of New Zealand's leading Bungy consultants and has been staffed and operated by some of the most experienced Western and Nepalese Jump Masters in the business, working to exacting international standards to guarantee your safety.

The anchoring and cable structure of the Canyon Swing were designed by Nepalese Engineers with more than 15 years of experience in bridge construction, using Swiss Technology for design and manufactured by Radha Engineering (an ISO 9000 certified Engineering Company in Nepal). The design and construction was under direct Swiss expertise and supervision.

Bungy Nepal and Canyon Swing takes place on a 166 meter wide steel suspension bridge. Swiss designed specially for bungy jumping with a 4x safety factor, the bridge has a loading factor of 250 kg per running meter.

This means that the bridge will hold 250 x 166 = 41500 kg or 41.5 tonnes. And... those are Swiss measurements! Over 6000 meters of steel wire was used to build the bridge that joins two sides of a beautiful valley

White Water Rafting

White water rafting involves negotiating fast-flowing rivers in an inflatable rubber raft or white water kayak over crashing waves and swirling rapids. Nepal has earned a reputation as one of the best destinations in the world for white water rafting. Nepal's thundering rivers, coming from glaciers high in the Himalaya, provide unmatched thrills and unrivaled scenic landscapes for rafting.

Rivers are graded on a scale of one to six, with one being the most calm. Four is considered to be challenging without being excessively dangerous for the novice rafter. Five ideally requires some previous river experience.

Canyoning

Canyoning is an amazing full body and mind experience that enables you to explore some of the last forbidden places in the Himalayas. Expert canyoning guides will lead you in abseiling, climbing, jumping and sliding down steep canyon walls and waterfalls to deep pools below. As pioneers of canyoning in Nepal, we introduced this adventure sport and offer a variety of canyons; from exploratory walks to some of Nepal's most extreme environments.

The Panglang Khola is a pristine canyon offering a challenging introduction to what canyoning is all about. This canyon prepares people for the Kahaule Khola and other canyons with a lot of abseiling. You'll learn how to control your descent as well as use all the canyoning gear we provide.

The Kanglang Khola is one level up from Panglang and introduces you to jumping and sliding besides spectacular abseils. The walk up to Kanglang Khola has beautiful views of the snow peaks of the Tibetan Plateau and the green Nepali valleys. In combination with Panglang Khola, Kanglang Khola gives you a fun and divers two days canyoning trip.

The Bhukuthe Khola, our newest canyon, is the limit of technical commercial canyoning. This spectacular high volume canyon has many abseils including a phenomenal 60 meter waterfall. A very scenic 40 minute walk through field and forest and a 10 minute walk back to your resort for overnight stay means we have one of the worlds most beautiful canyons right at our doorstep. This is a canyon not to be missed!

Swing

The canyon Swing in Nepal is the world's highest giant swing, enabling you a full-on adrenaline filled and gravity defying adventure.

Gravity seems like a seductive and cruel mistress as you jump, then pure freefall of 100m into the dramatic gorge before the swing lines take up the tension and pendulum you in a massive arc of 240m at 150 km/h.

The whole experience is so smooth that it is hard to tell when you have finished falling and when you begin your swing.

Mountain Biking

The magical kingdom of Nepal has got plenty to offer the mountain biker. From short two hour tours around Kathmandu and the Valley locality to the more adventurous mutli-day wilderness trails that involve bike-and-hire stamina.

The extreme off-road trails are in many cases to extreme to fully support and so those mountain bikers wishing to undertake such trips must recognise the seriousness of their intended route. Other routes offer the opportunity to cycle during the day and then to enjoy an evening in a small lodge of local guest house.

Gurkha Encounters will provide all the essential equipment to ensure full mobility over your chosen route, we will transport you to the start of your route and will collect you at the end of your journey. If you are both an experienced biker as well as mountaineer you might like to suggest your own itinerary and we will fine tune it for you. However if this is your first mountain biking visit to Nepal why not consider one of our tried and tested routes.

But there is no reason to stop there. We also offer the incredible experience of parahawking and paragliding. Offered either solo or tandem, this trip will take you over some of the best scenery on earth as you share airspace with Himalayan Griffin vultures and eagles as you float over monestaries, lakes, villages and jungle, all the while absorbing the spectacular views of the majestic Himalayas from a unique perspective.

Parahawking is a great variation to paragliding, as you will find yourself gliding along side specially trained hawks as your guide.
